LGBTQIA+ Affirming care
Your identity is not a problem to be solved. Being queer, trans, nonbinary, questioning, or anywhere else on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum is not the issue, but the way the world responds to it often is. Whether you’re navigating family dynamics, internalized shame, coming out (again), gender exploration, or the chronic exhaustion of living in a world that isn’t always safe or affirming, you deserve a space where you don’t have to defend who you are.
As a queer-affirming therapist and board member of the Kansas City Queer Affirming Therapists Guild, I’m committed to providing a space that is inclusive, affirming, and deeply respectful of your lived experience. Therapy can be a place to process the hard stuff, but also to celebrate your joy, your strength, and your sense of becoming.
While I’m not a member of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I approach this work with care, humility, and a commitment to ongoing learning. However, I also fully understand if you’d prefer to work with someone who is part of the community. If that’s the case, I’d be more than happy to provide referrals to trusted queer therapists in the area. Just reach out!
I also love working with parents, partners, and loved ones of queer folks who are trying to show up for someone they care about. Whether you're navigating your own reactions, seeking to better understand, or wanting to learn how to be more affirming, I’m here to support you without judgment, so that you can focus on being supportive of your LGBTQIA+ loved one.
Tools I use in this approach:
My approach is relational, collaborative, and tailored to what you need. I frequently use Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore identity development and internalized oppression, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients connect with their values and move through the world with more authenticity and courage. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help challenge internalized narratives that just aren’t yours to carry.
And when there’s trauma or chronic invalidation that still lives in the nervous system, EMDR can be a valuable tool in the healing process.
