Disordered eating & body Image Concerns

Soap Box: Not everyone meets the criteria for a diagnosis of an eating disorder, but that doesn’t mean that your relationship with food and your body isn’t disordered. Unfortunately, a lot of disordered eating behaviors are normalized in our culture as being “healthy” or “wellness.” But when we continuously turn to external forces to tell us when/how/how much to eat (i.e. diet plans, advice on social media, numbers on a scale), we are eroding our body trust and demonizing food.

Aren’t you glad you asked??

A big part of this work is learning to accept and honor your body as it is and to realize that changing your body isn’t the way to make peace with it. I take a weight-neutral, Health At Every Size approach in my work with clients, and I apply Intuitive Eating principles to encourage clients to turn inward and honor the internal cues their bodies send them to tell them when/how/how much to eat.

Not familiar with Intuitive Eating? This podcast episode is a GREAT place to start!

Tools I use in this approach:

I pull out all the stops in working on body image and disordered eating, but a big portion of my work in this area comes from the Intuitive Eating Pro Skills training I completed with Evelyn Tribole, one of the creators of Intuitive Eating.

Additionally, I utilize Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and when appropriate, EMDR. My approach is tailored to meet each individual client’s needs.
